Mert’s Famous Orange Scones

My grandson Brad and I are very fussy about the texture and moistness of a scone.  We feel this recipe nailed it!  Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Orange scones:  Make plain scones and frost and glaze after baking with: powdered sugar, orange juice and zest, vanilla.

Mix dry ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 T. baking powder
  • 1 t. cream of tartar

Add 1 stick of softened butter and cut with pastry cutter until crumbly.

Make a well in the center of the dough and add the liquid ingredients and flavorings.  Stir by hand until ingredients are well mixed.

Liquid ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup half and half
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • 1 t. almond extract

Put parchment paper on a baking sheet and spray with baking spray.  Scoop out scones, dividing into about 24.   Bake 15-18 minutes. Cool on a rack, then glaze.
