The Gift of Today

I recently read a story about a woman who visited Africa. One day she and her

hosts were going to two events in two different areas. When they got to the first

event she asked her host, “When will we need to leave here in order to get to our

next appointment on time?”

The host replied, “We will leave here when we are ready. We need to give our

full attention to these people here now, and we cannot do that if we are already

thinking about where we are going next.”

After pondering the host’s answer, she realized just how difficult it is to live in the

day. She said, “I love to reflect on the past and dream about the future, but the

present can pass me by all too easily.”

We Americans seem always to be in a rush. This story was a great reminder to

me that TODAY is a gift! Maybe that’s why it’s called the present.
