Your Not-So-Big Home

Are you working with a small space? To make the best use of your not-so-big home, begin by viewing the space both vertically and horizontally. Position major pieces of furniture in the most functional arrangement for conversation. Consider placing major furniture pieces at an angle if they are not too wide. This allows you to add dimension to the room by using the space behind the major pieces to add visual height through the use of artwork, and lighting, and decorative accessories. In this photograph notice the contrasts created by combining a variety of textures: course, rough pottery, smooth lamp shade, glazed pottery. Notice the levels of vertical height, all of these elements work together to add visual movement, texture and pleasure to the room.
